The Booming Business of Booth Rental.

Updated: Jan 9, 2018

Considering leaving your commission based salon job? Unsure of where to start? Feeling a bit overwhelmed? I've got you. Leaving my commission job just a little over two years ago, I was terrified, unsure, and totally in the dark. I had worked in a commission salon for so long that I didn't know where to start and I had a really hard time finding valuable information online about what to expect from this new experience. So, here we are. Let's chat.

The booth rental business is booming. It gives stylists a chance to run their own business, manage their own books and time, and also allows for a pretty substantial increase in income from a traditional commission based salon setting if you play your cards right. Even with the increase of expenses, like liability insurance and employee tax, you can still do really well on your own.

One of the greatest things about a suite/booth rental or a micro salon, is that it allows you to either stay small, or grow into something larger. If we, as stylists, take a step back and look around at our industry, things are changing. The commission based salons of yesteryear are slowly disappearing (or morphing into chair rental salons) and more and more suite rental or chair rental salons are popping up. We are also unfortunately competing largely with chain salons, which combined with suite rentals takes up about 75% of consumerism in our industry. Being in the Midwest, we are much slower to see this change, but for those of you who don’t think it’s coming, or already happening, open your eyes. It's here.

As the morph has started to turn more into actual change, I've taken notice that a lot of the social media influence we see these days is online. Larisa Doll, Guy Tang, and lisalovesbalayage are sitting at the tip top of the iceberg of what is now a very prominent, strong online force. Online education is stronger than ever, and the once secretive narrative that stylists lived by has evaporated into thin air. People are more willing to share what they know, and others are more than willing to listen. How cool is it that at anytime of the day, any day of the week, you can hop online and learn something new? Am I right?

This also has opened a platform of infinite possibilities for stylists who love to share, or educate. We are seeing more and more Instagram famous hairdressers being endorsed by large, professional salon companies. They’re simply sharing their techniques and ideas on a platform. Usually no formal training, no education classes, just being who they are and doing what they love. How Incredible!

The booth rental business opens infinite possibilities for any hairdresser. If you're looking for more, or want to create your own brand, or maybe you just want more control over your schedule. Maybe you're super happy at the salon you're at but are just looking for some inspiration or ideas. Whatever the case may be, I'm grateful to have you as part of my journey and I look forward to growing together.

All The Love!

xx Stevie
